What’s the difference between a stage and a photo set? Those were the words constantly on her mother’s tongue whenever Minji voiced her discomfort over being made to sing and dance in front of crowds of people. It was different, though: on stage she was forced to face and look into the eyes of hundreds of fans watching her every movement, and that made her very uncomfortable. The Chae family was known to breed performers, evidently by her veteran singer father, her famous actress mother, and her international r&b and rap idol brother, but Minji was just always a bit different. For some reason she had spent the first few years of her life shut up in their mansion instead of being paraded around her parents’ A-list parties like her brother, almost as if they were trying to keep her existence a secret. She never liked being cooped up at home but adjusted to her conditions by reaching out and making friends over social media sites from a young age. Naturally, she became rather comfortable in front of her phone and web camera.
Staring into a glass lens, Minji felt no hesitation making whatever silly, cute, or serious face she could think of. Her little hobby had led her to growing a decently sized fan base as an ulzzang on multiple social network sites and blogs (although no one seemed to recognize her as the sister of NTROPY’s main dancer B34T), and she would have been happy to pursue modeling instead of being pushed out into the spotlight by her parents. As a compensation, they chose to promote her as the visual member of S!REN so that she would have plenty of reasons to do photoshoots and commercial films. It seemed like the only time her parents actually understood and took care to accommodate what she wanted to do—until she realized they were enthused by the thought of their daughter’s face plastered on more magazines than her groupmates.
With S!REN taking their time in producing their next comeback, Minji’s managers wasted no time in booking her with any and all magazines they could find. A high-end clothing brand looking to promote their line of winter clothing this year selected both her and a Sae Guk idol Tae, also known as ri$k’s visual member, to model some of their new coats and accessories. Minji didn’t feel as though she got along with many other idols she crossed paths with—except of course her NTROPY oppas, her groupmates, and some of her labelmates. Otherwise, people looked down on her for lacking anything trailing after the word “Visual” as her group position on her profile and assumed she was talentlessly in Omega Entertainment only because of connections. To make matters worse, they were right, and she didn’t even share their genuine passion to be a part of the industry.
It wasn’t that Minji was a catastrophe as an idol: she could sing decently well (as one would expect after such strict training) although she lacked the lung capacity to project her voice as powerfully as Gwen or Ye Jin (or anyone else). And she could dance, though she was by nature clumsy and often forgot dance routines due to a lack of interest—so she definitely didn’t appreciate being shoved in front of their dance numbers. Hearing that another visual member would be modeling with her, well, perhaps she got a bit ahead of herself with excitement that they could possibly relate to one another and share a connection for once.
The weather had cooperated and given the art directors a touch of snow in the air without overwhelming the sky with storm clouds. As soon as Minji’s ride came to a stop alongside the park where the camera and production had begun setting up their equipment a while ago, she had wanted to bounce out of the van and rush over to meet her co-star, but instead a stylist had caught the younger girl by the wrist and whisked her off to a tent to get dressed first. Impatiently Minji sat in a cold chair with a subtle pout and a coat on while hair and make-up artists whizzed about her with their brushes.
As soon as they were finished, she hopped out of her chair and wandered toward the way out of the tent filled with portable mirrors, clothing racks, and make-shift changing areas. Along the way she passed a table where a container of hot tea had been brought to their set by catering, and so she picked up a couple of paper cups and filled them with it before placing a lid over them, one for herself and one for her partner.
Only then did Minji manage to spot Tae Hyun amongst the chaos of directors and techs running around trying to get the set arranged and ready to begin shooting. She took a few confident strides over in his direction (to the best of her ability given the petite length of her legs) and seemed to take the male by surprise when she did make it into his close proximity. No matter. Minji held out the cup of tea to him with a big, bright, closed-eye smile. “Annyeonghaseyo! I’m Chae Minji, it’s nice to meet you.” She opened her eyes and blinked away a snowflake on her eyelash when she noticed his delay in taking the tea from her. “Here, it’s for you. It’s so cold out here,” she commented, before again looking to him with a warm smile.
It was probably safe to say that Tae Hyun was one of the few people who truly enjoyed the winter. The heat and humidity of summer did nothing for him, the rain of spring was just depressing, and in autumn people were always tracking in little bits of fallen leaves all over the place. Which wasn't to say that winter was perfect or anything. Though he liked the cooler weather, sometimes it was too cold outside even for him. And he could have done without the slushiness of snow that was starting to melt or that got pressed up against the sidewalks from snowplows. But even then, South Korea didn't always get that much snow, so it was always nice when it did fall.
And snow it had! It wasn't too much to be a hassle, but just enough to get that typical wintry feel to the outside world. Tae Hyun approved. And it would be perfect for this photo shoot that he was being pulled out to do, something about a winter line of clothing for some brand he didn't care all that much about. Though he was from high society, in truth Tae Hyun had never really cared about what brands of clothing he wore or any other nonsense like that. It didn't matter to him. Then again, nothing really mattered to him in the first place aside from his group ri$k.
He wouldn't be alone, however. During the car ride to the park where the shoot was being held, his manager had told him that he would be working alongside another idol, S!REN's own visual Minji. Truthfully he didn't know all that much about; he never paid much attention to that sort of thing. He knew a little about her group's debut earlier in the year, he had heard somewhere down the line that she was from the same well-known family as the former NTROPY member Min Ki, and if he saw a picture of her he could probably be able to point her out among her group members. But that was pretty much it. Whether he liked it or not, he was sure that he would end up getting to know her at least somewhat better after the day was over.
As soon as his manager's car had arrived at the park, he was immediately whisked away to get changed and styled for the shoot. While his hair and makeup were fixed up or applied, the young man flipped through a couple of social media pages on his cell phone to bide the time. Once he had finally been released, Tae Hyun was quick to leave the tent that had been set up for them to get ready in. He lightly kicked at a small mound of snow in front of his shoe before walking further along until he wound up closer to the photography crew. If he wanted to be a nice person, he would have offered to assist in setting things up. But the visual wasn't known for being nice. Not that he was some horrible person, but it was like his manager had joked during the ride to the shoot earlier- Tae Hyun was just about as cold as the winter weather he enjoyed so much.
Besides, he didn't know the first thing about assembling light stands or anything else of that nature. It was better to just stay out of the way. So instead he merely observed the crew working. They set things up, a photographer snapped a couple of test shots to be sure the angles and lighting were right, and if it wasn't exact things were readjusted. It wasn't really all that entertaining to watch, but what else could he do? Not much at the moment, at least not until they were ready for him. So for now he would just have to stay put where he wouldn't get in the way.
A bored sigh escaped his lips, the breath clouding together in a smoky billow of air. His eyes closed as his hands dug down deep into his coat pockets. Well, one thing about whatever brand this line of clothing was for, their coats were in fact nice and warm. He might have to look into purchasing one at some point. Tae Hyun's thoughts had slipped away from him, content in the rare moment of peace where he wasn't being shuttled around to some CF filming, photo shoot, or rehearsal with the rest of ri$k.
And then he heard an unfamiliar voice to snap him away from his thoughts. So much for peace. For a second time he sighed, this time opening his eyes once again as he did. Tae Hyun glanced at the girl who had approached him out of the corner of his eye. When did she get there? She was like a mouse, quiet and tiny. Then again, she had too much pep in her voice to be considered mouse-like by any stretch of the world. "I see someone had their happy pills this morning," he commented icily, the corner of his lips tugging up into a smirk as he shifted to face her full-on. His hand extended to take the cup she held out in offering to him. "Ahn Tae Hyun. And thanks." Sure he could be cold and maybe his comments made him come off like a jerk at times, but he still had manners! If she could have the thought to introduce herself, then he could too he supposed.
Minji pursed her lips together and narrowed her eyes in his direction. Happy pills? Seems like you didn’t, she thought in her mind, but kept it to herself as she turned to lean her back against the tree. When it came to other people receiving snide comments, Minji was quick to put a bully in their place, but she didn’t mind that much when it came to her. For one thing, she was used to it since the other trainees in Omega hadn’t exactly been fond of how easily her connections accelerated her in the company. So she got teased often, but it didn’t bother her anymore (well, they could say whatever they wanted about her lack of talent as long as they kept their mouths shut about her lack of height). She let Tae Hyun’s comment roll off her shoulders; at least she had gotten a smile out of him...well more like a smirk, but she could pretend like it was a smile.
A few seconds passed between them quietly while Minji scrambled to think of something else to talk about. She was highly sensitive to others' emotions in that she could pick them up better than a search dog trailing after a scent, thanks to years spent by the sidelines observing crowds of people. Instead of interacting with them, she was more prone to watching. Already by his tone and body language Minji could tell Tae Hyun didn't prefer to talk to her, and she could understand that as a quiet person herself. Well, she was quiet when there were others to be loud and obnoxious for her (like Sang Kyu-oppa), but when the person she was with didn't talk much themselves, Minji found it within herself to keep the conversation moving. Not only that, but this time she wanted to walk away from the photoshoot with a new friend, so she wasn't going to give up that easily.
I wasn't sure if you were more of a coffee or tea person, which one do you prefer? No…that wasn’t a good conversation starter.
"Do they make you do a lot of these? Photoshoots i mean..." she blurted out, lifting her gaze toward the sky relentlessly coating them with bits of white powder before returning it to her partner. “I heard that you’re ri$k’s visual.” Her face brightened, and it took some self-discipline to hold back her excitement from infecting it entirely. As naïve as it was, she could only anticipate his affirmative response and the start of a bond forming between them because of it—a friendship, because of their similar position. She didn’t about the condescending, negative connotation attached to the position—perhaps because she had never cared about it herself—and so she didn’t anticipate that her words could possibly cause any offense.
