The last place that Mi Hyun wanted to be was anywhere that was near her father. And yet, that was exactly where she had found herself. When Jinyoung had insisted that she join himself and his coworkers while they went out after work with her father and their superior, it had been clear that he wasn't giving her much room to refuse. And boy, had she tried to refuse! First she had tried telling him that she didn't want to impose. Next she had tried the excuse that she needed to be up early the next morning for a photo shoot and therefore couldn't justify going out with everyone when who knew how late the night would wind of running. However, none of the excuses she had tried had worked; it was clear that he really was not going to take no for an answer, so she had no choice but to finally relent and join the young doctor like he was so insistent on.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all. A girl could hope, right? Surely as long as she steered clear of her father, things would be fine. Besides, her father was a lot of things, but one thing he wasn't was stupid. He wouldn't try to hurt her while there were other people around. That would just be idiotic. He could lose his job if that happened, to say the least. But even so, Mi Hyun decided that the farther she could try to keep from the man, the better off they all were. Honestly, she doubted that he wanted to see her there any more than she wanted to be there herself, but Jinyoung was insistent and Mi Hyun had a hard time sticking up for herself or putting her foot down when she really needed or wanted to. Oh well.
It was a good thing that the model was naturally so quiet, otherwise it probably would have been more obvious that she was in far from a pleasant mood. In all honestly she felt rather irritated that she was being pulled out to join Jinyoung, her father, and some other coworkers of the two doctors. She kept telling herself that Jinyoung meant well, that he had no reason to think that there was any tension between father and daughter. Even if he hadn't lost his memories, as she had just found out just a little earlier that day, it was matter she had never confided in anyone about. He had no way to know, and she supposed that it was sweet that he had seemed so determined to have her join them all. Sort of.
On the plus side, she supposed it was kind of nice to get to spend some time with Jinyoung outside of the hospital visit she had been forced to pay. The downside of course was that he clearly had no memory of her anymore. Not to mention that he seemed completely different from the quiet and studious young man she had known before she had run away from home three years before. But still, it was nice to get to see him again. Before they had left the hospital he had told her that the plan apparently had been to go out for Korean barbecue and then likely "hang out" somewhere else. It definitely sounded like it was going to be a long night then apparently.
Even though she was still frustrated that he was making her go out socializing with the group of people, Mi Hyun still stayed nearer to Jinyoung than the others that were also there, if only because he was one of just two familiar faces and the only one that she felt at least somewhat comfortable enough to be near. She wanted to keep a safe distance from her father as best she could, and luckily for her, he didn't seem to want much of anything to do with her either. The girl shifted uncomfortably as she stood beside Jinyoung. Her uninjured hand tugged idly at the edge of the bandage wrapped around her other wrist. "You're sure this is okay?" she questioned, a small frown drawn over her lips. "Really, I don't mind leaving..." It was worth just one more attempt at trying to get out of there.
Once Jinyoung had excused himself from the presence of the ladies, he had made his way to the showers room, taking a quick one and dressing himself in more casual clothes. From his locker Jinyoung put on a long-sleeved shirt and a puffed out jacket to keep himself warm. Once he had finished a bit of gel was applied through his long locks to style it out for the evening. It was the first weekend in awhile where he wasn't on call and he'd have a chance to go out drinking.
The group of co-workers as well as his boss' daughter had made their way to the Korean barbecue spot that the doctors frequented due to its close proximity to the hospital. Jinyoung had whined a couple of times on the walk over that he wanted to go somewhere farther away simply to get away from the suffocation of the lab coat and the responsibility of work.
All of them remained outside, waiting to see if a table was available. As they patiently stood still a small conversation was going about the crew, Jinyoung only becoming distracted when he noticed how quiet Mi Hyun was being. He wanted to as her if she was doing okay, but didn't want to appear to be rude. Instead he just smiled at her lightheartedly.
"Of course it's fine, we're happy to have you out."
From Mi Hyun's point of view Jinyoung must have appeared as some odd twin. Jinyoung had always tried to cover his face with his long bangs and would dress simply in white polo shirts and slacks, but now he was in modern clothing and hair gelled up for a sense of style.
"Oh! Our table's ready." He chimed, tugging Mi Hyun in the direction of the group.
Each person spread out and sat in a chair, Jinyoung leading Mi Hyun to sit in the seat adjacent to him, but suddenly realized it might have been rude because she might have wanted to spend some time with her father, especially since he worked so much at the hospital.
The doctor already had seated himself across from the duo so there was no casual moment to correct his mishap. "Excuse me mam!!" He called out loudly. "We need lots of meat and vegetables!"
"And soju!" His colleague called out.
"Mi Hyun-sshi, is there any side dishes or anything you'd like?" He asked with that same charismatic expression.
The Jinyoung before her now was so vastly different from the one she had known just a couple short years before. Not just in his behavior, but his appearance too. He dressed differently, his hair was styled differently; there was almost a part of her that thought maybe she had stepped into some kind of alternate universe (or maybe that he had and was replaced with some kind of a doppelganger). But when she thought back to what the nurse had told her about him and the accident he had been in, she supposed it was foolish to think that he would behave the same way she had known him before. Even so, it still had come as a surprise to her to see him dressed the way he was once he had returned and before they had gone out to meet with the others. Even though she now knew what had happened to him, the entire situation surrounding his loss of memory still felt so perplexing.
To most others, his assurance that there was no trouble in her being there would have been wonderful. But to Mi Hyun, it was the exact opposite. Her last attempt at fleeing had been squashed like a small insect, proven only further when he had been so quick to pull her along with the others as the entire group entered the restaurant finally. All she could do really was so follow along behind him, mumbling a quiet, "If you're sure..." as she did so. Well, one good thing was at least they were out of the cold. The model was dressed warmly for the winter weather, but still. It felt nice to be out of the bitter chill in the outside air. But the fact that she was there with a group of strangers, her father, and an old friend that might as well have been a stranger too considering he couldn't remember her, was hardly comforting.
If there was anything good about the situation, then she supposed that maybe it was that at least Jinyoung seemed insistent on her sitting with him, considering he had lead her right over to sit beside him. At the very least, it was better than having to be stuck between two people she had never met before. Now just as long as her father stayed far from them, everything would be okay and maybe she would be able to at least make it through the night and come out metaphorically unscathed. But no, no of course that wasn't what appeared to end up actually being the case. Mi Hyun silently prayed that her father would stay at the opposite end of the table, but much to her dismay the older doctor made his way over to sit across from Jinyoung and herself.
Mi Hyun felt every muscle in her body grow tense now that the man she had been so sure she had escaped from was sitting so close. A small scowl was drawn over her lips, but she kept her gaze lowered at her lap both to conceal the scowl and simply out of an old reflex. She had learned at a young age that it was better to just keep her head down around the older man, and even though she hadn't actually seen him in years before that day, old habits did in fact die hard. The sudden volume behind Jinyoung's voice was what got her to lift her gaze once more (and jump slightly from surprise in the process). Her voice seemed to have been at least momentarily stolen away, for when he then turned to speak to her again, she merely shook her head quickly in silent response to his question. It probably wasn't polite to not give him any sort of verbal answer however, so after a second or two, and after a quick but wary glance in her father's direction- he always had seemed to have issue with her speaking up and oftentimes made it clear he prefer she stay silent- she forced herself to speak up. "No, that's alright. But thank you," she said, forcing herself to give him a small smile if only so she didn't seem rude.
Mi Hyun's personality seemed to alter a bit since the appearance of her father. Earlier in the doctor's office she had appeared somewhat opening to the older male and even had spoken with a series of sentences rather than quick and short replies like she was now. It gave Jinyoung pause, and he began to wander if there was some tension between her father and herself.
Of course Jinyoung wasn't about to claim that he had some knowledge of her lifestyle. When they were younger and his memory was in tact the two had often spoken of the pressures and organized lifestyles that their parents had portrayed for the duo in the future. That connection was lost now, and unknown to Jinyoung, he was attempting to rebuild a new connection.
A waitress came with the items for the group to begin to grill the meal. A few of the female doctors and nurses began to put the food on the grill while the men began to twist the tops of the soju bottles, spreading out a beginner shot for each of the people down the row.
One of the seniors in their department gave a short speech about how well everyone had done in the past months as well as with the holiday rush. The shot glass was twisted between his fingers as he circulated it left and right, listening to the scripted speech until it finally ended with a "Cheers!."
Jinyoung pushed the glass against his lips and swallowed the alcohol in one shot, sucking air between his teeth as he felt the sting of the drink. "AHhh." He exhaled, turning his expression toward Mi Hyun and her shot.
He could see an uncomfortable expression across her face and a bit of guilt wallowed in the pit of his gut as he felt responsible for bringing the doe eyed girl to the outing. While the rest of the group was finishing their drinks he quickly swapped their shot glasses and downed Mi Hyun's portion, a cough coming out from the double drink.
A few fello interns laughed at Jinyoung, jesting that he couldn't take just one shot smoothly, an evil glare responded back to them before he turned back to Mi Hyun with a grin.
"Shin Mi Hyun-sshi took it like a champ! I need to learn from her later."
It was a relief that Jinyoung hadn't tried to push her into saying anything more. Instead she was able to fall back into another moment of silence. But while normally Mi Hyun felt perfectly comfortable being so quiet, right now she still instead just felt so tense. Then again, that feeling likely wouldn't be fading any time soon. Not until she was home again later that night, or at the very least no longer near her father. Speaking of, the older man only then seemed to even acknowledge his daughter's presence across from himself. Having caught sight of her injured hand raising up while she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, he asked in a flat voice, "What did you do this time?"
Mi Hyun knew full well that the likelihood of her father actually caring about what had caused her injury was slim to none. But it was all about keeping up appearances. Since he had been working when her manager had insisted on taking her to the emergency room, obviously he had no way of knowing what had caused her injury in the first place. And considering they were at a sort of social gathering with his colleagues, she supposed there was at least some obligation to be sure she was alright, if only to make it sound like there was no bad blood between the two of them. However, she hadn't failed to notice the lack of consideration in his voice, nor the choice of wording that made him clearly quick to assume she was at fault for something that should have been preventable (as opposed to the minor accident that it truly had been). Her response to her father was even shorter than what she had given Jinyoung just seconds before, though there was just the smallest trace of a stammer this time around. "I-I slipped."
That seemed to be good enough for him though, as he simply made a quiet scoffing sound before turning to speak with the doctor beside him. Her eyes closed for a moment as her heard lowered slightly, a near-silent sigh leaving her lips. Maybe she could get away with leaving now if she just acted like she wasn't feeling well. But then again, feigning ill in the company of doctors and nurses would likely get her nowhere fast. Mi Hyun doubted that she actually looked like she wasn't feeling well after all, so there didn't seem to be a very high chance of her skipping out on the night's events any time soon. Dammit!
As she helped put things on the grill, the girl didn't fail to notice the line of shots being poured out and set before everyone, herself included. It wasn't that Mi Hyun had a problem with alcohol per say. Though she was old enough to do so, she rarely drank at all herself but there was no real specific reason for that other than more often than not, she just didn't want or feel a need to drink on the few occasions she was out somewhere. And of course, she had learned young that it was better to keep out of her father's way if he was home and had been drinking at all, but in a social situation like this she knew there was nothing to worry about. But it was just that- the situation itself was what made her feel so uncomfortable. Because she drank so very rarely combined with her small build, Mi Hyun had next to no tolerance for alcohol. Of course, one shot on it's own wouldn't do much, but still. It only added to her ever-growing list of reservations about being out that night. She really should have been more insistent when Jinyoung had prompted her to join himself and the others that night.
Mi Hyun probably wasn't doing the best job of hiding her obvious discomfort at the moment, but so what? Everyone was probably just focused on the doctor that was talking, so who cared if she let it show how displeased she was at the moment? When the doctor's speech was over, everyone else seemed quick to grab and down their shots without hesitation. She, however, wasn't as fast-moving about it. One person seemed to take notice of this, though. Before she could finally take hold of the shot glass before her to drink it, her eyes widened a little in surprise as Jinyoung suddenly swapped her still-full glass with his newly-emptied one. Her lips parted to object, even if it was something relatively small he still didn't need to go out of his way like that for her! But before she could find her voice to say anything, he had already downed her shot as well, though not without coughing a bit afterwards.
While he was teased by a couple of interns for his reaction after drinking what they assumed had only been one shot instead of two in rapid succession, Mi Hyun just gave him a small but genuine smile as a means of silent thanks. He hadn't needed to do that, but it was a kind gesture all the same. Maybe this new Lee Jinyoung wasn't so bad, not completely at least. However, his next comment made her cheeks flush a light red; at his words a couple of people had turned to look their way as if shocked that such a small girl could have taken a shot of soju far better than the young doctor beside her. Mi Hyun immediately ducked her head down to try and hide the blush, though luckily she didn't feel the multiple sets of eyes on her for too long and was able to look up again. Her gaze shifted to Jinyoung and once again she gave him a little smile, this time followed by a quiet, "Thank you for that. Are you alright?"
The group cheered for their first shots together. He just kept a smile crept against his lips, unsure of how to tell his colleagues that he planned on turning in his resignation at the end of the month to become a song writer. It sounded crazy, giving up eight years of college and trying to get into the entertainment world of all places. He was bound to know that his mother would be against it, but in all honesty, the new Jinyoung didn't care. He didn't care about the rich girls she tried to set him up with to rise her own status and he didn't care about appeasing any dreams of his deceased father. As cold as it sounded, Jinyoung wasn't that person and he found it hard to love complete strangers, especially people that he didn't get along with in the first placec.
This was all due to his acceptance in Orion co. If he hadn't of submitted his music in before his accident and if he hadn't lost his memory, who knows if the person he was before would have had the courage to do what he was doing. From what he had heard before, Jinyoung version 1.0 had been very accommodating to his parents wishes, but those days were long gone.
An hour later Jinyoung had already taken two more shots on Mi Hyun's behalf, totaling him for six so far. There had been about twenty minutes since the last one hetook as some of the girls were up singing some upbeat song, while hismale colleagues were shaking their tambourines. Their department head had left a bit ago, not staying for long as usual, and he could see a bit of tension release from Mi Hyun without his presence.
"ANOTHER SHOT!" His friend shouted next to him. Evil eyes darted towards the other male, as if killing him with just a look. ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL ME FUCKER!? He thought to himself as he passed along the shots. Quickly he took Mi Hyun's, pouring it quickly with water as he had done before their friends picked up. Then they handed him his, and a deep breath was taken as he prepared this time for tequila shots. They're alcoholics!
"One, two, three!" They all cheered, taking a shot. Another joke was made about Jinyoung being a light weight as they could see a waver in his equilibrium, leaning onto Mi Hyun just a little bit without realizing it, his shoulder pressing against hers.
Things got a bit easier for Mi Hyun once her father had decided it was time to go. The lack of surprise from anyone else in the group led her to believe that it was likely normal for him not to stick around at such gatherings for extended periods of time. But that was absolutely fine with her! With her father gone, the girl was able to relax again, at least slightly. She still felt on edge just being around a group of people she didn't know, but it wasn't as bad now as it had been while her father was still there. It helped, too, that Jinyoung seemed set on not pushing her into anything she felt uncomfortable with. At least as far as the drinking went if nothing else. Truthfully, she felt bad that he was going out of his way like that for her, but at the same time it was sweet of him to be so thoughtful.
Still, it was a lot of alcohol for one person to take in such a short amount of time. It would be one thing if he had simply being downing just his own shots, but drinking hers too? That was a lot all at once. She couldn't help but be concerned for him, though if that was just because of all the alcohol he had consumed in such a short period of time, or if it also had to do with any underlying feelings of friendship from back before she had run away from home and he had lost his memories was unclear. Either way, she couldn't shake off the feeling of concern for the young doctor beside her. And as such she felt a need to keep a close eye on him, just in case anything should happen.
Luckily, despite everything going on around them, it wasn't too hard to keep her attention on Jinyoung. One or two of the other girls there had tried to get her to join them when they decided to start singing, but Mi Hyun had politely declined. It wasn't that she thought she couldn't sing or anything like that; the few months she had spent as a trainee in Sae Guk when they had tried pushing her into following her late mother's footsteps as an idol had been enough to prove to herself that she could, but that didn't mean she wasn't still shy about it. Besides, she felt a stronger inclination to keep an eye on Jinyoung over anything else. Luckily for her they hadn't tried to convince her otherwise (whether that was just because they knew she wouldn't change her mind or because they didn't feel right with forcing their department head's daughter into anything, she neither knew nor cared) and continued on in their fun without her.
And then suddenly, someone on her former friend's other side had announced that it was time for another round of shots. Mi Hyun couldn't help but sigh a little. They certainly liked drinking, that was for sure! And her concern for Jinyoung only increased. How much more alcohol could he even take in such a short time frame? The thought alone made her frown a little, but it really wasn't her place to try and tell him not to keep drinking. No matter how concerned she was, it was better to just keep quiet on the matter for now. Though it came as no surprise to see him wavering slightly, she still felt herself jump a little when suddenly he had leaned against her. "Are you feeling okay?" she asked him, unable to hide the concern in her voice. He didn't seem like he could take all that much more alcohol, not right now at least. It still wasn't really her place to say anything about it, but even so she couldn't help it when she soon added in, "I-I'm not sure you should drink much more tonight..."
